there's always more to learn about this beloved beverage.

Coffee Beans

There are two main species of coffee beans in the world, Coffee Arabica, and Coffee Robusta. More than three-quarters of the beans that are sold in the world today are Coffea Arabica, the majority of the remainding bulk are Coffea Robusta.
But what is the difference?

Robusta

Arabica

Robusta

Robusta coffee is coffee made from the Coffea canephora plant, a sturdy species of coffee bean with low acidity and high bitterness. canephora beans, widely known by the synonym Coffea robusta, are used primarily in instant coffee, espresso, and as a filler in ground coffee blends.

Arabica

The coffee plant is an evergreen shrub, classified under the genus Coffea, and part of the botanical family Rubiaceae. There are several species of Coffea, the finest quality being Arabica, which today represents 59% of the world's coffee production. Arabica originated in the highlands of Ethiopia.

Brewed Coffee

  • Chemex:
  • The Chemex brews coffee using the infusion method, which makes it most similar to drip coffee in terms of body and taste. Chemex filters are 20-30% thicker than those used by other pourover methods such as the Hario. The result is a slower brew and a richer cup of coffee. Although not as rich as the French Press, the Chemex does produce a sediment free cup of coffee that will impress anyone used to the weaker taste of most auto-drip coffee machines.
  • V60:
  • The V60 Coffee Dripper (also referred to as the V60 Coffee Maker) is made by Hario. The name stems from the shape of the device. It is “V” shaped with angles of 60 degrees. The internal sides also have interior ridges which help with air flow during the brewing method. Filter paper is inserted into the V shape and coffee grounds placed within the filter paper. The brewed coffee then drips into your cup, delivering a great coffee.
  • Kalita:
  • The Kalita Wave Dripper is a pour-over coffee brewer from Japan with a flat bottom design. The flat bottom design is for a more even extraction. Unlike the Bonavita Immersion Coffee Dripper or the Clever Coffee Dripper, the Kalita Wave is not a pour and wait, but a hands-on brewing method which requires an even flow of hot water on the grounds. So it is most similar to a Hario V60, but with a flat bottom filter. The Kalita Wave Dripper comes in two sizes: #155 and #185. The #155 is smaller and is ideal for a single cup brewer.

    Why Coffee?
Coffee can help people feel less tired and increase energy levels. That’s because it contains caffeine, the most commonly consumed psychoactive substance in the world. After you drink coffee, the caffeine is absorbed into your bloodstream. From there, it travels to your brain. In the brain, caffeine blocks the inhibitory neurotransmitter adenosine. When this happens, the amount of other neurotransmitters like norepinephrine and dopamine increases, leading to enhanced firing of neurons. Many controlled studies in humans show that coffee improves various aspects of brain function including memory, mood, vigilance, energy levels, reaction times and general mental function
